Artist statement
Kees van Dongen was a very of influential painter in the Fauve movement known for his sometimes outlandish portraits.van Dongen had his first artistic training at the Royal Academy of Arts in Rotterdam from 1892-1897. As a student, he sketched the denizens of Rotterdam's port, generating a taste for the demi-monde which affected much of his art. He later moved to Paris, where he would stay and pursue his career as an artist. In 1905 he participated in the Salon d'Automne this launched the brief but fiery career of the Fauvists, so called because of their use of garish colors and apparent crudeness. Matisse also exhibited at this Salon, one of several parallels in their art. Painting that Kees van dongen did that I am doing this project on is called the corn poppy it was made in 1919. I decided to recreate this painting because it caught my eye when I was trying to pick what piece of art work I should do I was looking for two things one I was looking for something that I knew everybody wasn't going to do and two I was looking for something original but simple and when I looked at this painting it was exactly what I was looking for and the painting had a meaning that I liked the girl in the original painting seems shy but yet bold and like she wants to pull out that boldness but she doesn't know how so I recreated her with tattoos and that's her being bold and not caring what other people think and just being herself and she's in front of the holy place because she is repenting and hoping that God understands why she did this. The process and which making this well first I had to ask my teacher ms. jenetsko to buy me and she did thank you for that. After I got the doll I worked on the holy place first because that would be the messiest thing I did so I went and found a small piece of cardboard that will stand. The I got some paint the colors purple, black red white and yellow I mixed the yellow and white so it would become the cream color then I painted the card board and had a friend draw a cross on it then I paint the cross white this took all of two days. After that I started drawing tattoos on the doll I was gonna do like tribal tattoos but I realized I'm not that great a drawer so I just drew some bob wire, stars a bird, and various roads on her the bob wire represents her boldness the roads represent her kinda being stuck and not knowing what she wants to do and the bird and stars don't represent anything drawing these things took all of three days. the reason I used the color purple it represents Transition from the material world to spiritual realms I used the color black because it is a color often used to show fear. The cream color was used because it shows acceptance the bright red color shows courage and the white color shows confidence . The color palettes I used were intermediate colors and complementary color. Also in this project I changed the style in which this art was delivered Kees van dongen made it a painting I basically made it a sculpture I guess you can.well this is my artist statement hope you enjoy
